University of Michigan Annual DEI Summit + Community Assembly

October 11, 2021 @ 7:00 am - 8:30 am PDT

PARALLEL PANDEMICS: ADDRESSING STRUCTURAL RACISM IN THE AGE OF CORONAVIRUS

This year’s summit provides a time and space for the campus community to come together to discuss structural racism within the academy and beyond, and ways we might address and dismantle those structures.

The past five years have yielded experience and data that allows us to sharpen our approach and act with increased precision and skill. The parallel pandemics of COVID-19 and structural racism have also synergized to create a moment in our nation’s history where we must decide if our corresponding actions will be transformative or repetitive of the past. Now more than ever, we must simultaneously challenge our current reality and innovate to create what our future will be.

The DEI Summit provides an opportunity for the University to highlight the progress we’ve made over the previous year, the changes we’re experiencing across campus, and opportunities for continued engagement with our community. As we continue to navigate the changes of the pandemic and slowly transition back to in-person activities, we will for a second year, host the Community Assembly and Discussion as a virtual experience. This format will once again present an opportunity for greater creativity, wider reach and deeper engagement.
