WORLD OF WONDER is a lyrical, rhyming picture book about a young child who learns to navigate the world with a sense of wonder, by activist and award-winning documentarian Valarie Kaur.
Even when confronted with injustice in the world or unkindness at the park, Wonder Baby learns that wonder is the root of empathy and love. Wonder Baby chooses to love everything alive.
WORLD OF WONDER is more than a picture book: it’s a journey of Revolutionary Love. Come journey with Wonder Baby. We wonder about the earth and discover the awe that inspires care. We wonder about people suffering injustice and find that listening to stories inspires courage. We wonder about someone who inflicts cruelty—and discover the power of repair and connection. Wonder Baby wonders about their own emotions, even when tears come pouring down: “You are a part of me I don’t yet know.” Wonder becomes the conduit to love; it creates the conditions for kindness, care, and courage.
WORLD OF WONDER distills Revolutionary Love into its essence. It illustrates all three practices of Revolutionary Love—love for others, opponents, and ourselves. It names wonder as the root of love. It affirms that love is our birthright. As Wonder Baby discovers: “When I wonder, my love can grow!”
What if all children had this understanding of love as their foundation?
A note from Valarie Kaur
I wrote this book as a song for my daughter before she began preschool. On our walks to the ocean, we marveled at the plants, birds, and trees we found along the way. Her eyes filled with wonder. I realized that I did not need to teach my daughter how to wonder—I only had to protect what she already knew. And so this song began… Wonder Baby says, “Wow! Woah! You’re a part of me I don’t yet know.”
When my husband heard the song, he said: “You boiled down 400 pages into a nursery rhyme!” He was talking about my first book See No Stranger, which presented the concept of Revolutionary Love. I responded, “Yes, but I had to write all 400 pages to find it!”
And so, WORLD OF WONDER is for children, and it’s also for anyone who wants a daily reminder of Revolutionary Love–an invitation to orient to the world with wonder and respond from that luminous place within us.
Just before my daughter’s graduation from preschool, an advanced copy of WORLD OF WONDER arrived in the mail. Every page is vivid and alive, pulsating with vibrant energy, thanks to illustrator Cynthia Alonso. I read the book to my daughter’s class. Soon, all the children were singing with me, “You’re a part of me I don’t yet know.” Let’s all sing together!
