Please join me in signing this letter calling on @kamalaharris to stand for justice in Palestine — to my South Asian Family.
To all who want to know why I endorse the Democratic nominee in this election:
I believe we need a Harris presidency over a Trump presidency — to save whatever democracy we have, to combat fascism and authoritarianism, to prevent even more egregious harm to our communities, and to protect our ability to dissent and organize — AND at the same time, I believe we can and must hold Harris to account. I do not support her record on criminal justice, immigration, and above all, Gaza. We have witnessed 300+ days of genocidal violence on our screens — the death toll surpasses 40,000, including 15,000 children. We have never seen children massacred on this scale, this efficiently, in our lifetime. And our government has been complicit.
What do we do?
There is space for many roles —
Some of us need to apply outside pressure + withhold support for the Democratic nominee. This is an important role. It pushes the party to take seriously our commitments to justice and liberation.
Others need to play the role of fighting to get out the vote — to ignite what democracy we have in order to save it. A Harris-Walz ticket is not the solution: it is the opening of a window — where WE have a real chance to organize and mobilize and advance the world we need.
Whatever role you choose, let it be a practice in courage. You will be criticized; a thousand arrows will be flung your way. You can respond by flinging arrows back. OR by practicing a revolutionary kind of love: Make one hand a shield and outstretch the other, insisting on dignity and humanity above all. This is the path I hope to walk.
May we align our deepest wisdom with our words and actions.
May our hearts hold complexity.
May we struggle with one another AND refuse to cancel each other.
May we trust we are moving together collectively on the path of justice and liberation.
And when the labor is hard, may we hold this question from my Muslim sister @najeebasyeed:
Are we in each other’s future?
We are.
We are.
We are.
